Abstract: This paper introduces the application of the Image Analysis System (IAS) for the quantitative determination of microfeatures and composition of sedimentary rocks, such as mineral composition, percent of pores, morphologic features of fracture, and grain-size analysis. The results are compared with those through other methods. The authors agree that the IAS is faster, more accurate and with large statistic information. But, for most samples, the graylevel automatic detection of IAS seems difficult to be carried out. In this case, the semi-automatic determination is conducted by using the light-pen, and the operator must have geologic knowledge and experience. At last, comments are made on the prospect of the IAS used in ology.
