Abstract: The sediments hold information of, for example, phosphorus, which can be used to reconstruct the paleoecological and pollution history of the lakes and their drainage basins. In this paper, phosphorus forms in sediment cores from the Wuliangsuhai Lake and the Daihai Lake were extracted by a sequential extraction technique. The results indicate that the contents of AlP and ACaP in the Wuliangsuhai Lake are notably higher than those in the Daihai Lake. However, the contents of ExP, DeP and OrP in the Wuliangsuhai Lake are obviously lower than those in the Daihai Lake. The distribution of phosphorus forms can archive the information of eutrophication level and the palaeoenvironment and paleoclimate of the drainage basin of the two lakes located in different climatic regions. The contents of authigenic apatite, CaCO3bound P, and biogenic apatite (ACaP) and detrital apatite (DeP) can be used as effective parameters in the study of palaeoenvironment and paleoclimate.
